Dropped $700 on a pergola kit, then found the boards warped in 3 months
Bought one of those big box store pergola kits last spring. Looked great in the picture. Put it together over a weekend with my brother. By August the cross beams had bowed bad, like a smile curve. The wood was green, not kiln dried. Checked the fine print, the warranty doesn't cover warping. Has anyone else had luck with cedar vs. that pressure treated stuff for outdoor frames?

Went through the same mess with a cedar kit two summers back and learned the hard way that they all say kiln dried but a lot of them are not. What saved me was buying rough cut cedar boards from a local mill instead of a kit, way cheaper too. Let the boards sit in the yard for about two weeks so they could dry out and move around before I built anything. Then sealed every single cut end and face with a good oil based stain, twice on the ends since that is where water gets in. Two years in and everything is still straight, no bowing at all. Pressure treated is cheaper but it twists and cracks like crazy once it dries out in the sun, so I would not go back to it.
