I used to think cedar was overrated for raised beds but now I get it

Last spring I built 4 beds out of cheap pine from Home Depot because I couldn't stomach spending $12 per board on cedar. By August two of them were already splitting and the bottoms were rotting out where they touched the soil. My neighbor built his beds the same weekend with cedar and his still look brand new after a full winter and summer. I just spent $180 to redo mine with cedar and I should have just done it right the first time. Has anyone else tried to save money on lumber only to regret it later?

My wallet hates that I can relate to this so much.

Different take here. My wallet actually likes it when I find deals on gear I was going to buy anyway. Spent half what I would have on a nice truck tool box last month because I waited for a sale. If you're buying stuff you don't need, yeah it hurts. But timing the market right on things you already use saves money in the long run.
