My oven timer lie saved my banana bread every single time

I kept burning banana bread because the recipe said 60 minutes, but my oven runs hot (like, 25 degrees hot, I measured it with a cheap thermometer from Target). So now I set the timer for 45 minutes and just poke it with a toothpick until it's done, which means my bread comes out perfect and I look like I actually know what I'm doing. Has anyone else found a recipe number that's just totally wrong for their kitchen?

My cheap thermometer saved me from a whole different disaster. I had one of those old school ones with the spring inside that you stick in the door, and it convinced me my oven was running 50 degrees cold for like a year. Then I got a digital probe one from Amazon and realized the dial was actually pretty accurate, I just had my old thermometer jammed right against the heating element by accident lol. The biggest game changer for me was putting the thermometer on the actual rack where the food sits instead of hanging it off the front.

Does that cheap thermometer actually work? I used to ignore mine but now I trust it more than the oven dial.
