I was team buttercream until a bakery in Austin changed my mind

Always thought cream cheese frosting was too heavy for cakes, especially in summer. Then I tried the carrot cake at Tiny Pies in Austin last month and their cream cheese frosting was light and tangy, not thick at all. They must use a higher ratio of cream cheese to butter, maybe 2 to 1. Has anyone else found a good cream cheese recipe that doesn't weigh down the cake?

Nailed it with the tangy thing. I once tried to make my own "light" cream cheese frosting and ended up with basically liquid sadness. Looked like I was frosting a cake with soup. Now I buy it like a normal person. That 2 to 1 ratio you mentioned sounds like the secret though. I might be brave enough to try again this weekend. Probably end up crying into a bowl of store-bought frosting anyway.

Wait, is that actually a thing? I always thought cream cheese frosting was just heavy and sweet, but your description makes me wanna try that carrot cake. I guess I've been missing out on the lighter version this whole time.
