Bringing store-bought brisket to a pitmaster's party was a mistake
I was invited to a BBQ at a friend's house who's a serious pitmaster. For some reason, I decided to bring a brisket from the local store instead of making my own. When he saw the packaging, he just gave me this look and the whole mood shifted. Now I'm cringing every time I think about it, lmao.

My cousin in Texas told me most pitmasters see store brisket as a learning tool, kind of like what pat992 said. Bringing it ready-made to their party probably felt like bringing a frozen pizza to an Italian chef's house.

BBQ contest teams sometimes buy store briskets to check judge tastes. Your pitmaster friend might have been upset you didn't ask for his tips first. Or was he just bothered you brought a ready-made brisket to a cookout?

Store briskets are for practice runs, not so much for sussing out judges. Your friend was probably just miffed you brought a pre-cooked one to a BBQ.
