Dropped $400 on a craigslist offset smoker in Lubbock and the firebox grate was rusted through
Drove 5 hours each way to pick it up because the pics looked clean. Got it home, dumped a chimney of lit coals in, and saw the ash falling out the bottom of the firebox. I should have asked for a pic of the inside with a flash on before I ever left the house. Has anyone had luck welding in a new grate on a cheap offset or am I better off just cutting my losses?
Man, 10 hours of driving for a rusted out firebox stings. If the rest of the steel is solid, welding in a new expanded metal grate is worth a shot, but once that bottom is thin you're kinda chasing rust forever, so check how soft the metal is around it first.
