Hot take: the $90 welding blanket I bought for my offset smoker was the best money I have spent
I got tired of fighting wind and temp swings on my 22 inch Oklahoma Joe during a 38 degree cook in Kansas City, so I wrapped the chamber in a cheap Harbor Freight welding blanket. My cook times dropped by almost 2 hours and I used way less charcoal, but I am wondering if a real insulated jacket is actually worth the $300 some folks charge. Anyone run a blanket long term and see any rust issues under it?
That cheap blanket is gonna bite you later. Moisture gets trapped between the blanket and the cold steel and that is exactly how rust starts, especially in KC where the temp swings all over the place. My buddy ran a HF blanket on his OK Joe for one winter and by spring he had pitting all along the firebox side that he had to grind out. A real insulated jacket is made to breathe and it does not hold condensation against the metal the same way. So yeah, save the $210, but plan on pulling that blanket off after every cook and drying the chamber or you will pay for it with a rusted out smoker.
