I finally walked out of a shift at a diner in Austin because of how they treated the dishwashers

The owner yelled at a kid for dropping a plate and then made him stay an extra hour unpaid to scrub grease traps, has anyone else seen managers take advantage of the youngest workers like that?

It's like some people see a young worker and just automatically think they can treat them like dirt. That whole extra hour unpaid thing is basically just modern day bullying with a paycheck.

The whole "unpaid extra hour" thing is actually illegal under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which covers most restaurant workers, including dishwashers. I used to think that only applied to hourly wage theft if it was regular, but no, even one hour of forced unpaid work is a violation. That owner is on thin ice because the Department of Labor takes that seriously (especially with minors involved). The kid should file a wage claim with the Texas Workforce Commission, honestly, it's free and they don't need a lawyer for it. It's messed up how that industry treats the youngest staff, but there are actual laws that can bite back.
