My friend's house rule made a 2 hour game last 5 hours

I was at a game night at Dave's place last month and he insisted we play a heavy euro game with a variant he found online. He spent 20 minutes explaining it and it added three extra steps to every turn, so we got stuck doing math for 5 hours instead of the usual 2. Has anyone else had someone introduce a house rule that totally destroyed the pace of a game?

Oh man @jessica_dixon nailed why that dragged so bad.

That thing about the variant adding three extra steps to every turn, that's probably why it dragged so much. Heavy euros already take a while, and adding more steps just multiplies the time. Most online variants aren't playtested well, they're just ideas someone threw together. Dave should have run a test round first instead of springing it on everyone. Next time, I'd say just stick to the base rules for a game night unless everyone agrees to try something simple.

Dave's variant reminds me of how people add extra steps to simple stuff at work. They think more rules mean better results but it just bogs everything down like a clogged drain. Sometimes the basic version works fine and trying to upgrade it only makes a mess.
