Serious question, why does everyone love 7 Wonders so much?

I was at a game night in Austin last month and told a guy I don't get the hype around 7 Wonders. He spent 10 minutes explaining the strategy to me like I just didn't understand it. Has anyone else had a game just never click for them no matter how many times you play?

Last year I finally got into 7 Wonders after three failed attempts. What did it for me was playing with a group that didn't take it too seriously. The first few times I played, everyone was super competitive and it stressed me out. Once I sat down with some friends who were just there to have fun and try stuff, I finally started seeing how the different paths worked. I still lose most of the time, but now I get why people enjoy the whole science vs military vs trading thing. Maybe try it with a different group, cause the vibe really changes how the game feels.

That guy sounds exhausting. Like, cool buddy, you figured out the trading card combos, want a medal? I've played 7 Wonders maybe five times and it's fine. It's a card game where you pick cards and try to do a thing. Not exactly chess. People act like it's the deepest strategy game ever when half the time you're just hoping the person next to you doesn't take the clay you need.
