A guy at the library coffee shop changed my whole view on 'The Road'
I was re-reading Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road' for our club, feeling stuck on the bleakness. This older guy at the next table saw my copy and just said, 'You know, I think the fire the man carries isn't hope. It's just habit.' We talked for maybe twenty minutes about whether the book's point is to keep going or to finally stop. It was the best debate I've had all year, and it wasn't even at the official meeting. Has anyone else had a random conversation that totally flipped a book for them?

My buddy had a weird one with a security guard about Catcher in the Rye. The guard said Holden just needed a decent sandwich and a nap, and now my friend can't read it seriously.

Ran into a retired English teacher at a bus stop who swore 'The Great Gatsby' was about economic anxiety, not love. She pointed out every character was obsessed with money or status, even the supposedly romantic ones. Now I can't unsee it no matter how many times I read the green light scene.

Honestly, a barista once told me Moby Dick is just a guy having a really bad day at work.
