Call me crazy but I think 'The Alchemist' is way overrated

I was at a book club meeting last month in Austin where everyone was raving about how life-changing it was. One guy said it 'cured his anxiety' after he read it on a flight. I just don't get it - the message is basically 'follow your dreams' repeated for 200 pages without any real plot or character growth. Am I the only one who thinks it's just a glorified fortune cookie?

Not sure it cured anything, more like it just helped him get through the flight.
