Found a weird trick for handling book club split votes
My book club got stuck 6 to 6 on whether to read a thriller or a memoir last month. I grabbed a random page from each book and had everyone vote after reading just one line. It broke the tie in 2 minutes flat and nobody felt burned. Has anyone else used a quick reading test to settle debates over picks?

Only one line? That's crazy, I would have panicked thinking something like "The" would decide the whole thing. But you're right that it made people feel like they had real info to go on instead of just arguing. Might try this next time we're stuck between two books.

Oh man, I feel that panic hard. Like, you're sitting there staring at one line wondering if you just doomed the whole thing. I've been in that spot before and honestly it felt like my brain was short-circuiting for a second. But the weird thing is, it actually works way better than you'd think. People latch onto that single detail and suddenly the conversation goes from "I don't know" to "okay but THIS line changes everything." It's kind of a lifesaver when you're stuck between two good options and nobody wants to budge.
