Pro tip: That time my book club argued over a single chapter for 45 minutes

My book club hit a wall last Tuesday debating whether the main character in 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' was too naive or just hopeful. It turned into a three-way split, with one lady bringing receipts from page 142. Does your group ever get stuck on a small detail and kill the whole discussion?

Oh man, that sounds frustrating but also kind of amazing! My group got stuck on whether a character in "Remarkably Bright Creatures" was being too nosy or just caring. We literally spent half an hour pulling quotes about her showing up at the aquarium uninvited. What finally worked for us was someone saying "okay, let's agree she's both and move on to how that affects the story." It broke the deadlock because we were all right in our own way, just looking at it differently. Maybe try that next time - acknowledge the split exists and then shift to a bigger question about the book as a whole.

Has your friend ever dealt with a book club that just couldn't let go of one tiny detail? Mine told me her group spent an entire meeting arguing about whether a character's wallpaper choice was foreshadowing, until someone finally just said "maybe her taste just sucks." It worked because @quinnmitchell is right - sometimes you just have to agree on the outcome and talk about what it means for the bigger story.
