PSA: My book club's chat about that office novel didn't sit right with me
The group loved the main character's rise, but I felt her choices were selfish. Let's not ignore the cost of success in our debates.

Wait, they didn't see that? The cost was the whole point, it's wild they missed it.

See it ALL the time with phone plans, extra fees sneak up.

Seriously, how do you miss the cost part? That blows my mind. It completely changes the whole thing they're talking about. If you take the price out of the picture, then yeah, maybe it seems fine. But with that huge number attached, it's a total deal breaker. Just wild they looked right past it.

In my view, high cost can signal better quality or long term value. Take luxury cars, for example. The price tag is huge, but buyers look at performance, safety, and status. Your mileage may vary, but for them, the benefits outweigh the cost. It's not about missing the cost, it's about weighing what you get for it. Just a different way to see things.

Ugh I read that book last month and had the same weird feeling. Everyone at my work was raving about it but I kept thinking about the assistant she totally screwed over to get that promotion. Like yeah she got the corner office but left a trail of broken people behind her, lol. Felt gross to cheer for that.
