Tried pushing our club to read a graphic novel and got totally shut down

I suggested 'Maus' for next month and the group leader said 'that's not real literature' in front of everyone. Has anyone else had to fight for a non-traditional book pick?

Ugh, that's rough. I brought in a few pages of "Persepolis" to show the art style and how the visuals carry the story. Sometimes seeing a panel changes minds. Our group ended up reading it last year.

That's a smart move, @simon_lopez35. It shows how much we rely on just hearing about something instead of actually seeing it. People make quick judgments about graphic novels being simple or just for kids without ever looking at the work. A powerful image can cut through all those wrong ideas in a second. We see this same thing happen with all sorts of media, where a quick sample does more than a long talk ever could. Giving someone that direct look often changes the whole conversation.
