Update: My 'simple' bathroom leak fix turned into a full wall rebuild
I noticed a small damp spot on my bathroom ceiling last fall and figured it was a quick seal around the shower drain. After three separate attempts with different sealants over six weeks, the spot kept growing. I finally cut open the drywall and found a cracked pipe joint from a bad renovation done 15 years ago. The 'two hour' job became a full weekend project replacing a section of pipe, the drywall, and the ceiling texture. Has anyone else had a tiny sign point to a massive, hidden problem that took way longer to fix than you ever expected?

Tell you what, calling that a weekend project is generous. Once you open a wall, you never know what you'll find. That hidden damage from old work is the worst kind of surprise. My money says you'll be finding bits of drywall dust in that bathroom for the next six months.

Oh man, drywall dust is the easy part. The real kicker is the texture match. You can never get that popcorn or orange peel to look right unless you redo the whole ceiling. That's what adds the extra week, not the cleanup.
