Showerthought: My regular at the bar told me his old boss made him pay for a broken coffee pot.

He said it was a cheap drip machine from the office kitchen, and the boss docked his pay by $40 without asking. That got me thinking about all the little ways a bad manager can take from you. Has anyone else had a boss try to make you pay for normal work stuff that broke?

Forty bucks might be the tip of the iceberg" - wow, that really stuck with me. I would have lost my mind if a boss tried to take forty dollars out of my paycheck for a worn out coffee maker.

Sounds like a cheap boss, but was it really worth making a federal case over forty bucks?

Forty bucks might be the tip of the iceberg. If a boss will nickel and dime you over a small amount, what bigger stuff are they cutting corners on? It sets a bad tone. Would you trust them with your overtime pay or a proper bonus? Sometimes you have to draw a line over the small things to stop bigger problems later.
