Stuck between running my own crew or taking a cushy foreman job 8 years ago

Back around 2016 I had to choose between starting my painting company or taking a foreman gig with a big outfit paying $28 an hour steady. I went with my own crew because I hated the idea of answering to some pencil pusher who never picked up a brush. First year I barely broke even lost about $3,000 on a bad bid for a condo complex in Trenton. Took me nearly 3 years to get consistent but now I don't have to kiss anyone's ring to take a Friday off. Anyone else pick the riskier path and just grind it out?

Man I did the same thing with my landscaping biz, first two summers were brutal but once you build a solid client base it's way better than punching a clock for someone else's profit.

Feels like you took the same leap I did, that first year is a beast.
