Used to lay brick by eye until a foreman called me out on a 3-story wall

Back when I started, I'd just eyeball everything and hope it looked straight. That worked fine on small jobs like garden walls, but last year on a 3-story townhouse in Portland the foreman made me redo a whole section because it was 1/4 inch off across 20 feet. Now I use a line level on every run, even for short stretches. Has anyone else had a foreman tear apart their method?

Funny how the whole world runs on "close enough" until somebody actually checks.

Made me redo a whole section" sounds about right... a buddy of mine had a foreman back in Denver who made him tear down half a fireplace because the mortar joints were 1/8 inch off from the plans. He still grumbles about it when we grab beers.
