Is reflowing a GPU in the oven a real fix or just a ticking time bomb?

So my old GTX 970 started artifacting hard last week. I read online you can bake the motherboard in your oven at 385F for 8 minutes to reflow the solder. It actually worked, got another 3 weeks out of it so far. But I keep seeing people say it's a hack that only lasts a month and can damage other components. Has anyone here had a reflow last longer than six months, or am I just delaying the inevitable?

I used to say it was a dumb hack till my buddy's 780 ran a full year after his bake job, changed my mind completely.

Wait, a whole year? No way. That's insane. I tried baking a dead GTX 970 a few years back and it barely lasted three months before it started artifacting again. Your buddy must have some kind of voodoo magic or something because I've never heard of one lasting that long after a bake. Maybe he got lucky with a perfect reflow or something.
