PSA: My $3 bag of rice just exploded all over my kitchen floor
I was in my apartment last night, trying to make a big batch of rice and beans to get through the week. I went to pour the last of my cheap store-brand rice into the pot, and the whole bottom of the bag just split open. I'm talking like two cups of dry rice, all over the floor and under the fridge. I spent 20 minutes sweeping it up, feeling like I just threw money away. Has anyone else had a cheap ingredient totally fail on them like that? What do you do to make sure stuff like rice or beans lasts?

Man, that "feeling like I just threw money away" part is so real. I used to just dump bags of stuff into my big container and toss the package. After a similar bean spill, I started doing this thing where I open bags over a big bowl on the counter. That way if the seam gives out, it all just falls into the bowl. It adds one extra step but saves so much hassle. I also check the bottom of the bag for weak spots now before I even pick it up.

Opening bags over a bowl feels like overkill to me. I just cut the whole top off the bag with scissors right above my container. No weak seams to worry about and it's actually faster than trying to tear it open.
