That $30 bulk spice haul from the discount store was a total dud
I grabbed a big variety pack of spices from a closeout place near Cleveland for about $30. Figured it'd last me a year and save a ton. Turns out half of them tasted like dust or had zero smell at all. The paprika was basically brown sawdust and the cumin had no kick. I ended up throwing most of it out after three months and buying fresh from a regular grocery anyway. Has anyone ever gotten a decent deal on bulk spices, or is it always a gamble?

I had almost the exact same thing happen with a $25 bulk bag from a place near Akron. The oregano was basically crushed leaves with no flavor at all. @the_kai is right about turmeric being a gamble too, I once got a bag that just tasted like dusty nothing. What I started doing is only buying whole spices in bulk like cumin seeds or coriander. You can toast them yourself and grind them, and they actually keep their smell for way longer. Pre-ground stuff from discount stores is almost always old and stale because nobody rotates their stock. For dried herbs, idk, I just stick with the little jars from the grocery now, at least you know they haven't been sitting around for two years.
