My aunt showed me her cash envelope system at a family cookout

We were at her place in Dayton last month and she pulled out these labeled envelopes from her kitchen drawer. One said 'groceries $300', another 'gas $120'. She told me, 'When the cash is gone, the spending stops for that category.' I started doing it for my takeout budget and saved $80 this month. Anyone else use this old school method for specific spending?
