I spilled a full cup of coffee on my yearly log in a Phoenix coffee shop, so I quickly blotted it, let it dry, and turned the brown splotches into a weird abstract border with a gel pen.

Has anyone else had a major journal spill and managed to make it work?

Oh man, that's a great save. I saw a post once where someone spilled red wine on a travel journal. They let it dry, then drew little maps and landmarks over the stains so it looked like intentional watercolor art. Your gel pen idea is just as clever.

Yeah I've totally been there with coffee cups on plans. Best trick I found is to blot it fast with a paper towel, don't rub, then trace over the stain with a fine liner once it dries. Makes it look like you meant to add shading or a border.

Remember reading that wine spill post too, but it was actually a sketchbook, not a travel journal. The artist just went with it and painted the whole page red, then added black ink over top. Your coffee border sounds like the same kind of quick thinking.
