Dropped $65 on a used benchtop mortiser at a garage sale in Fresno and it paid for itself on one job
Found this little benchtop mortiser at a garage sale off Van Ness in Fresno for $65 (guy was moving to Oregon and just wanted it gone). I figured for that price it was worth a shot even though the fence was a little sloppy and the chisel needed sharpening. Used it on a set of 8 shaker cabinet doors for a kitchen remodel, and doing those mortises by hand would have eaten up most of a Saturday. It saved me probably 4 hours of work and my shoulders were thankful (my hand chisel work is fine but slow as molasses). The cheap fence did bite me once though, one mortise came out a hair off center and I had to plug and recut it. Has anyone else had luck tweaking the fence on these budget mortisers, or am I better off just building a jig for it?
