Vent: That one tweet from 2016 that got a local baker shut down feels so overblown now

I live in Austin and there's this pastry shop called Sugar & Crumb that got totally hammered back in 2020 because the owner tweeted something dumb about mask mandates in 2016. I mean the tweet was kinda bad, but the person was clearly just frustrated with her kid's school at the time. They dug up every old post and got her advertisers to pull out within like 48 hours. The shop closed after 3 months and she lost her whole savings on that place. Now I drive past the empty storefront and it just feels so extreme for something that old. Anyone else think the mob goes way too hard on small local businesses for ancient tweets?

Huh, that's rough. I mean yeah the mob is way too harsh, but there's another angle: the people running those cancellation campaigns usually don't even live in the same city. Like some random user in Ohio finds an old tweet from a baker in Austin, shares it with their big follower count, and then locals who never even saw the original tweet feel pressured to join in. That baker lost her business to people who never would have bought her pastries anyway. It's like a drive-by shooting from a thousand miles away.
