Tried paying my water bill in cash at the city office and it was a whole thing
I brought the exact $47.32 in cash to the municipal building downtown, but the clerk said they only accept checks or card payments now and sent me to a specific convenience store that handles cash payments for a $3 fee. I learned that even some official places are phasing out direct cash acceptance, which adds extra steps and cost. Has anyone else run into this with regular bills, and do you have a better system?

That's such a pain, sending you to a store with a fee. It's like a hidden tax for using cash. My electric company did the same thing, they have a "partner" kiosk at the grocery store. It feels backwards because cash used to be the standard way to pay for everything. Now you gotta plan an extra trip and pay more just for using legal tender. I just set up auto-pay online to avoid the hassle, even though I don't love giving them direct access.

Actually my water company in Phoenix charges a $3 fee for cash payments at their office. Processing cash costs them more in staff time and security than digital payments. Those fees just cover the real expense of handling physical money. It's not a hidden tax, it's passing on the cost of a less efficient payment method. If you want the convenience of cash, paying a little extra for the service makes sense.
