Old timer named Hank told me to use shop vac on my brush kit and I laughed at first

Been sweeping for 8 years in Portland and I always just shook my brushes out over a trash bag. I figured the soot would destroy a shop vac in minutes. But this guy Hank, he's been doing it since the 70s, he told me to get a cheap $30 shop vac with a drywall filter bag and just suck the soot right off the brushes between jobs. I thought he was crazy. Finally tried it after a particularly dirty oil boiler job last Tuesday and I'll be darned it works great. The filter bag catches everything and the vac didn't even choke. Only thing is you gotta empty it outside not in your truck or you'll be breathing stuff all day. Anyone else use a vac for brush cleanup or is that just a rookie move still?

My buddy tried it and blew soot all over his truck cab.
