Can we talk about the BEFORE and AFTER of my fridge after ignoring it for 6 WEEKS?

I went on a work trip to Ohio for pressure washing a big warehouse. Came back and opened my fridge and the smell hit me like a wall. The difference between how it looked when I left and how it looked when I got back was INSANE. A bag of spinach turned into brown sludge. Some leftover pasta had this green fuzz growing on top. The worst part was a half gallon of milk that had gone chunky and I didn't notice until I poured it. All that food wasted and I felt terrible. What was supposed to be a 2 week trip turned into 6 weeks because the job kept getting bigger. What do you guys do when you know you'll be gone for a long stretch? Do you just toss everything or try to freeze stuff?

Dude that milk discovery is a rite of passage nobody wants. For future trips I just toss anything perishable and keep the condiments, saves the heartbreak and the smell.
