My hot water heater died mid shower last Tuesday and I had to decide fast

I was covered in shampoo, water went cold, and I knew the pilot light was out. Jumped out dripping wet, grabbed my tools, and tried relighting it three times with no luck. The thermocouple was clearly shot based on the soot I saw on it. I had a spare from last year's hardware store run that I never used because I thought it was the wrong size. Took me 20 minutes to swap it out, and the water was barely warm again by the time I finished rinsing. That moment forced me to learn the exact model of my heater so I always keep the right part on hand. Has anyone else had to fix a major appliance with zero warning and just hoped your guess was right?

And you're lucky you're still here to tell the story. One wrong move and that water could've turned you into a human circuit. Disposals are no joke when electricity's involved. Always kill the breaker before you stick your hand in there, no excuses. Glad you walked away from that one.
