Apprentice noticed I was squaring vises wrong for 6 months

Was setting up a job last week when one of the new guys just watched me for a minute, then asked if I ever sweep the back jaw clean before tightening. I'd been leaving chips under there since day one. He showed me it takes 10 extra seconds and my parts have been coming out .005 straighter ever since. Any of you old-timers ever get schooled by a kid fresh out of tech?

You ever had a 20-year guy show you the same trick and just nod like you already knew it? That's the worst part. But honestly, the kid probably picked it up from a teacher who actually ran a machine before teaching. I've learned more from a fresh mechanic showing me a YouTube video than from some old-timer who just grunts. The trick sticks better when you see it work, not just hear about it.

Wait @sethr11, don't old-timers usually teach by showing you the trick firsthand too?
