I thought dropping out meant I'd never make decent money, but my last pay stub proved me wrong

I left my business program three years ago, feeling like a total failure. My dad kept saying 'you need that paper' and I believed him. I got a job installing fences in Austin, figuring it was just a paycheck. But after my first full year, I cleared over 65k, which was way more than some of my friends with degrees were making. The real shock was seeing that number on my W2 and realizing a skill I learned on the job was actually valuable. Has anyone else been genuinely surprised by their earning potential after leaving school?

So your dad thought you needed a piece of paper but you just needed a post hole digger? Good for you. A lot of those "good jobs" people talk about are just sitting in an office getting paid less to be miserable. Money's money, who cares how you make it.

True about the office misery. But some people actually like that stability. Not everyone can handle the physical work or the risk.
