Got burned on a rare variant cover from a sketchy online shop

I dropped $80 on a first print variant of a Batman #100 I thought was legit from some seller on eBay last March. Turned out it was a high quality reprint they didn't mention anywhere in the listing, and now I'm stuck with a fake. Anyone else get taken by those shops that crop their photos weird to hide stuff?

Why would you trust an eBay seller that crops their photos weird?

Got stung last month by the same trick on a Silver Surfer book.
