Just found out my 'rare' variant cover was a fake print

I paid $80 for a 'first print' of a new indie comic at a con last month. The seller said it was a limited run of 500. Got home, checked the indicia and the barcode, and it's a second printing they just slapped a sticker on. I'm out the cash and the comic isn't worth half that. Felt pretty dumb for not checking it right there. Has anyone else gotten tricked by a fake variant before? What's the best way to spot them?

Yeah, checking the cover price box is smart, but honestly I've seen second prints keep the same price too. Robert_craig is right about the "limited run" claims though, that's almost always a con seller trying to make a quick buck.

Man, that "felt pretty dumb" part hits home. I've been there. But honestly, I don't check the indicia on the con floor either. It's chaos. I look at the cover price box instead, that tiny print near the barcode. First prints usually have the original price, like $3.99. Later ones sometimes change or add a line. Also, that "limited run of 500" is a huge red flag for me now unless it's from the actual publisher's booth. Too many small sellers make that up.

My local shop has a legit limited run of 300 though.
