My buddy called out my comic snobbery and I had to admit he was right

I was talking to my friend Mike at a con last Saturday and he pointed out that I always skip any comic from the 90s that has pouches or a gritty reboot. He said stuff like that is exactly why new readers get turned off, because we act like certain eras are trash before even reading them. It hit me that I've been doing this for years, ignoring whole runs based on cover art alone. He showed me a random issue of Bloodstrike and honestly, the writing was way better than I expected. Now I'm going back and trying at least three issues from every decade I usually avoid. Anybody else ever get called out for being too picky with their pulls?

Your buddy called it right, and good on you for actually listening. That whole era of comics is basically the punching bag for anyone who wants to feel superior, but people forget that there's a ton of solid writing buried under the terrible designs and gimmick covers. I've done the same thing with the black and white indie boom of the late 80s, wrote off everything that wasn't from a major company. Turns out some of that stuff has killer pacing and character work once you get past the rough art. Now I make it a rule to give any book at least two issues before I decide it's garbage. It's easy to be a snob when you're not the one risking five bucks on a random back issue.

Lmao right? It's so easy to just shit on something without actually giving it a fair shot. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had that moment of "holy crap I was being such a jerk about this.
