Figured out I was putting my weight on the wrong side of my fins for 4 years
Was doing a simple hull inspection in Norfolk harbor and kept getting crazy calf cramps after 20 minutes. An old salvage diver I was working with pointed out I was kicking with my ankles instead of my hips, basically fighting the water the whole time. Anyone else have a basic thing like this that took way too long to click?

Oh man, that one hits close to home! I read something a while back about how most people overwork their ankle joints during fin kicks and it totally stuck with me. It was one of those random forum posts where a dive instructor broke down the biomechanics, and I remember thinking, "well, there goes my whole technique." Your calf cramps make so much sense now, because when you kick from the ankles you're using tiny muscles that fatigue fast instead of the big ones in your hips and glutes. I bet that old salvage diver saved you a lot of future pain by saying something.

Wait, so you're telling me all those years of me thinking I looked smooth underwater with my dainty little ankle kicks was basically just me doing everything wrong? Guess I owe @fionaw54 an apology if I ever complained about leg day, because clearly my hips and glutes were just taking a vacation. I mean, better late than never to learn you should be kicking like a frog instead of tap dancing.
