The week I cleaned 14 houses and 3 of them canceled last minute

Last Tuesday I had a regular cancel 2 hours before start time. Said her dog was sick. Then Thursday, two more backed out. One claimed I left streaks on her mirrors. I deep cleaned those mirrors twice. It was $450 of lost work in 4 days. Then on Saturday a new client tipped me $80 for scrubbing her grout. So did the good week even out the bad, or am I just chasing crumbs?

That bit about "one nice moment distracting you" really hit home. I used to think a generous tip could balance out any bad week, but you're right - losing $450 and patting yourself on the back for an $80 tip is just fooling yourself. The math doesn't add up no matter how you spin it.

You're fooling yourself if you think one good tip wipes out three cancellations in the same week. That $80 tip is a crumb compared to $450 in lost work. The math doesn't lie. You're letting one nice moment distract you from the fact that your schedule is unreliable and your clients are flaky. A single good client doesn't fix the bigger problem here. How are you planning to tighten up your cancellation policy so this stops happening?
