Chose rebar over timber for the retaining wall in Boise, and the inspector barely looked at it
Two options for a 40 foot retaining wall at a job in Boise: timber or rebar and concrete. I went with rebar since the soil there moves a lot when it rains, and the county inspector signed off in maybe 5 minutes. Has anyone else noticed inspectors go way easier on concrete than wood framing?
Concrete walls must come with a donut and coffee for the inspector, timber guys get the full Spanish Inquisition. 5 minutes in Boise sounds about right, he probably just wanted to get back in his truck before the wind picked up. Meanwhile a wood deck gets a guy measuring joist spacing with a caliper like he's building a piano.
My brother in law built a deck in Meridian last summer and the inspector spent 40 minutes out there with a level and a tape, checking every single hanger. Meanwhile the guy who poured his garage slab got waved through in about 3 minutes flat. What worked for him was just being there the whole time with the plans printed out and coffee in hand, asked the inspector straight up what he wanted to see before he started poking around. Turns out most of these guys loosen up once they see you actually know the code and aren't trying to pull one over on them. Now he keeps a cooler of sodas in the truck for inspection days and swears it shaves 15 minutes off every visit lol.
