My press releases used to go out by fax machine and I kind of miss the 3pm deadline chaos
Back in 2009 at a mid-size firm in Columbus we sent releases by fax blast and email, and I knew within an hour if a reporter bit because the phone would ring. Now it's all embargo pitches over email and I'm lucky to get one reply out of 40 sends. The wire service alone eats $800 a month, which is wild when half the pickups come from bots. I used to keep a paper media list in a binder with scribbled cell numbers, and calling a desk editor at the Akron Beacon Journal got me a feature in 20 minutes. Last month I pitched a product launch and got one short quote after two weeks. Does anyone still get real traction from phone calls, or is that just me being old?
Man, I feel this in my bones, the fax rush and a ringing phone beat refreshing my inbox any day. I still make calls and they do work, but it's maybe one in ten now instead of the old days.
