Picked a used road bike over a new hybrid and almost quit the first week
I was dead set on a $500 hybrid from the big box store because it felt safer, but a guy at the local shop talked me into a beat up 2008 road bike for $350. First ride I nearly ate it on a downhill turn, legs were shaking, heart pounding. After 3 weeks my lower back was screaming and I thought I made a huge mistake. But around week 6 something clicked, I adjusted the seat height and started pushing 15 miles without stopping. Now I'm 8 months in and signed up for a sprint tri next June. Anyone else go for the faster bike first and regret it before it paid off?

I tried a road bike first and sold it within a month for a cheap hybrid.

Yeah did you end up keeping the hybrid @christopherj63? I had almost the same thing happen with an old steel frame I grabbed off Craigslist. First two weeks my hands went numb, thought I broke something in my wrists. Then I flipped the stem and got some padded gloves. By month three I was doing 20 mile loops around the lake and couldn't imagine riding anything else. That moment when the bike finally feels like part of you instead of fighting you, that's the payoff.
