Why does nobody talk about the 'run through the sprinkler' trick for cooling off on long summer runs?

After I hit mile 8 in 90-degree heat last July and nearly collapsed, I started planning my route to pass by every lawn sprinkler I could find, and it dropped my heart rate by 15 bpm each time. Has anyone else tried this or am I just weird?

You mention the heart rate drop and I've noticed that in general people overlook these small, free ways to stay comfortable. Like at work, nobody ever talks about switching your mouse hand for five minutes when your wrist starts hurting, but it actually helps reset things without buying a special pad. Or how about using a cold water bottle on your neck while sitting in traffic? Simple tricks that cost nothing and work better than you'd think. I mean, we all get told to buy fancy gear or supplements, but half the time the answer is just being a little creative with what you've already got around you.

So wait, you're telling me I could have been doing this the whole time instead of just pretending I'm okay while my heart tries to escape my chest? I feel like my neighbors must think I'm training for some intense water obstacle race when I zigzag across their lawns like a drunk gazelle. Last week I almost ran straight into someone's garden hose because I was so focused on getting that cool mist. Honestly though, I'm convinced this is better than any fancy cooling vest those marathon influencers try to sell you. Just don't tell the sprinkler companies or they'll start charging us per splash.
