After staring at my draft for a week, I chose to cut my favorite character and the story finally clicked.

I mean, it was either keep the cool but pointless detective or focus on the grieving sister's story, and after 3 days of going back and forth, I deleted his whole subplot and the next 2,000 words just flowed, has anyone else had to kill a darling to make a plot work?

Felt this in my soul. I once wrote a whole magic system for a side character who was just there to look cool. Cutting him hurt but the main plot finally moved. It's like you have to clear the clutter so the real story can breathe. That flow you get after is the best feeling, makes all the doubt worth it.

Ever notice how that happens with stuff in your house too? You hold onto things just because they're cool, but once you let go, the whole room just works better.
