Bought a $40 'story idea generator' app and it gave me the same three prompts every time
I thought it would help with writer's block, but after a week all it suggested was 'a detective finds a key', 'someone wakes up with no memory', and 'a letter arrives from the past'. What's the worst money you've wasted on a writing tool that promised more than it delivered?

Remember when those fancy "smart" pens that record your voice and turn it into text were a big deal? I saved up and bought one, convinced it would capture my genius thoughts on the go. It mostly just filled pages with "um" and the sound of coffee shop noise, then died after two months. Total waste.

That whole era felt like we were buying promises instead of products. It wasn't just the pens, it was all the gadgets sold on the idea of fixing a human problem with a tech solution. They never account for the messy reality of how we actually live, like background noise or our own habits. We end up paying a premium to learn that some things, like just thinking through an idea quietly, don't need a complicated tool.
