I had to choose between paying off a card or saving for a down payment
My credit union in Phoenix offered me a personal loan at 8% to pay off a $5,000 credit card balance. The other option was to keep making minimum payments and put all my extra cash into a house fund. I chose the loan. My score jumped 40 points in two months because my credit utilization went from 85% down to 10%. It felt wrong to take on more debt, but the math worked. Has anyone else seen a big jump from fixing their utilization, or did I just get lucky?

Yeah the mental load thing is huge. That high utilization stress is a real drag on your focus, clearing it out probably freed up brain space you didn't even know you were using.

Tell you what, it's like carrying around a backpack full of rocks all day and then finally putting it down. You don't realize how heavy it was until the weight is gone. That constant background noise of "gotta pay that, can't forget that" just eats at you. Freeing up that mental space lets you actually think straight about other stuff. It's not just about the numbers on a screen.

That score jump is a temporary fix though. You just traded one debt for another at a lower rate, but it's still debt. The real win would have been grinding out the card payments and building savings with actual cash.
