Called a plumber for a leaky faucet, turns out I was the problem

Last Saturday my kitchen faucet started dripping and I immediately called a local plumber. He showed up, looked at it for 2 minutes, then handed me a new washer and said 'try this first next time.' Apparently I could have fixed it myself for $3 instead of paying him $150 for the house call. Felt pretty dumb but also annoyed he didn't just tell me that over the phone.

Ha, that's rough! I did something similar with my garbage disposal last year. Called a guy out because it was making this horrible grinding noise, turns out I just dropped a fork down there. He pulled it out in like 30 seconds and charged me $120. Felt like such a dummy standing there watching him fish it out. I mean, I get it, they gotta make a living but a heads up over the phone would've saved us both time. Now I always try youtube first before calling anyone.

Yeah that's the thing, half the time those guys probably know exactly what it is but they won't say because they know you'll fix it yourself and they lose the callout fee. You ever wonder if they're trained to be vague on purpose?
