My cousin told me to never call the cable company's main line, always ask for the retention department first. Tried it last week when my bill jumped $40.

Genius move! That department actually has the power to fix things, the regular line just reads a script.

My buddy got his whole bill wiped after one call to that department, the regular line had him going in circles for weeks.
