Rant: My phone company tried to bill me 5 years after I canceled

I was going through old bank statements last week, trying to sort out my taxes, and I found a charge from Verizon for $87.43. Thing is, I haven't had Verizon since 2018 when I moved to a new apartment and switched to T-Mobile. I called them up and the lady told me it was for an old device payment plan that I apparently missed. I pulled up my old emails and sure enough, I had a confirmation from 2018 that said my account was closed and paid in full. She kept putting me on hold and coming back with different excuses. First she said it was a system error, then she said it was a new policy that charges people for 'administrative fees' on closed accounts. I told her that makes zero sense and she just said 'I understand your frustration sir' and offered me a $20 credit. I hung up and filed a complaint with the FCC instead. Has anyone else had a company try to dig up old charges out of nowhere like this?

That's rough. Reminds me of the time I tried to cancel a gym membership and they kept billing me for six months after I moved to another state. Guess who paid for ghost workouts for half a year? This guy.

Yeah I heard some gyms make you send a certified letter to actually cancel, which feels like a scam @faithf77.
