Why I stopped defending Walmart's return policy after the Pine Bluff incident

Everyone always complains about Walmart customer service, but I used to give them a pass. Then last March at the Walmart in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, I tried to return a $60 blender that broke after three uses. The clerk told me I needed the original box with all four foam inserts, which I had thrown out. They wouldn't take it back, no exceptions, and the manager just shrugged.

This is just another example of how everything has gotten way too strict and rule obsessed. Stores used to actually care about keeping customers happy, now it's all about following some corporate checklist that leaves no room for common sense. You can't return a blender that clearly doesn't work because you tossed a box? That's not protecting anyone, that's just making life harder for regular people. It's the same thing I see everywhere now, from grocery stores refusing to take back bad produce to car dealerships nickel and diming you on warranty work. We've traded good customer service for a bunch of rigid policies that help nobody.

Haven't you ever tried to return something without a receipt at a store that doesn't know you? Policies exist because people lie and game the system all the time. Stores get hit with scams where someone buys a working blender, swaps it with a broken one, and returns it in the box. How is a cashier supposed to know you're honest from the next guy trying to pull a fast one? The old way of "just take their word for it" is how places lose money and eventually close down. If you want flexibility, shop at a local place where they know your face, not a big chain that has to protect itself from everyone.
