Appreciation post: That $8 thrift store bread machine that actually works better than my new one

Picked up a beat-up Oster bread machine at a garage sale in Austin for $8 last Saturday. Figured it would be a fun disaster, but the loaves come out way fluffier than what my modern $100 machine makes. I think the old heating element just cycles more evenly or something. Anyone else have luck with older kitchen gadgets over shiny new ones?

My 1990s Hamilton Beach bread machine has outlasted two newer models, and the loaves come out way taller with a better crust. I found the older one heats up slower but keeps a steadier temp once it gets there, which seems to make the dough rise more evenly. Your mileage may vary, but my old clunker is still kicking ten years later with zero issues.

Oh man, you nailed it. I've got a 90s-era Sunbeam that's built like a tank and I'll probably pass it down to my grandkids at this rate. That slower heat up is the secret weapon, I swear. The new ones rush everything and the bread comes out dense and sad. My old machine takes its sweet time but the crumb is always soft and the crust is perfection. It's like they actually engineered them to work right back then instead of just adding a bunch of digital nonsense that breaks in two years.
